Scorekeeper Certification
PAVO has developed a scorekeeper certification program.
The objectives of this program are to:
- Increase the knowledge and competency of scorekeepers, including assistant scorekeepers (libero trackers).
- Increase recognition of scorekeepers as professional members of the officiating team.
- Provide validation for scorekeeper compensation.
- Build a pool of certified scorekeepers.
PAVO annually develops scorekeeper training materials. The "Scorekeeper Training Video" and training manual (including the current-year examination) can be purchased together or separately on the PAVO E-Store or by calling (888) 791-2074.
Using the standards outlined below, PAVO boards (and other structures that establish a program that meets the minimum standards) have the authority to award and renew scorekeeper certification.
Scorekeeper Rating Standards
- Initial Certification Requirements:
- Attend a Scorekeeper training session that presents current material developed by PAVO and is taught by an approved PAVO instructor. Approved instructors include any PAVO State or National referee, any NCAA Division I conference assignor/coordinator, any individual who has been assigned as a scorekeeper to a Division I NCAA Regional or Championship event in the last five years, and any USAV National Scorekeeper with NCAA scorekeeping experience. (Additional approved instructors may be listed below.)
- Take the current-year written Scorekeeper examination (included with the PAVO Scorekeeper Training Manual). The exam must be corrected to 100%, and signed by the instructor.
- Obtain three written recommendations from any approved PAVO instructor, based on women's collegiate match performance. Those recommendations must be from observations within 90 days of the start of the term for which they apply.
- Submit a member registration form, the original corrected written examination (no copies accepted) signed by the clinician, three signed recommendations, and $15 in annual dues directly to the PAVO central office (P.O. Box 780, Oxford, KS 67119). There is no requirement to join a local PAVO board.
- Certification expires yearly on June 1. It begins when all materials (see below) are submitted to the PAVO central office, and expires yearly on June 1.
NOTE: PAVO members who have already joined through a local PAVO board do not have to submit the $15 additional dues for line judge certification. Also, if $15 dues is paid for line judge certification, no further dues are required for scorekeeper certification, and vice versa. The only requirement is to submit the written examination and recommendations to the PAVO central office.
- Renewal requirements:
- Attend a PAVO Scorekeeper Training Session where the current-year PAVO training materials are used, conducted by an approved PAVO instructor.
- Pass the current-year PAVO written Scorekeeper exam prior to each collegiate season corrected to 100% and signed by the clinician.
- Submit a member registration form, the original (no copies) corrected written examination with clinician signature, and $15 in annual dues (unless already a PAVO member) directly to the PAVO central office (P.O. Box 780, Oxford, KS 67119). There is no requirement to join a local PAVO board.
- Obtain and submit three written recommendations within each two-year period with the above paperwork.
Certified scorekeepers will receive the certification, a "Certified Scorekeeper" patch, a subscription to the Official Word newsletter, and PAVO member discounts on travel, events, and merchandise. Names of certified scorekeepers will be circulated through PAVO to conferences, NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, etc.
APPROVED SCOREKEEPER INSTRUCTORS:
1. Any PAVO State or National referee
2. Any NCAA Division I conference assignor/coordinator
3. Any individual who has been assigned as a scorekeeper to a Division I NCAA Regional or Championship event in the last five years
4. Any USAV National Scorekeeper with NCAA scorekeeping experience.
