Training Camps

PAVO Camp Program

Purpose: To offer on-court officiating opportunities, with constructive feedback from experienced officials, to the official who desires improvement of skills and career advancement.

PAVO has been offering training camps for several years throughout the country, in various venues. Camps are held in conjunction with both NCAA Division I spring tournaments, collegiate club and junior spring and summer events. Camps offer on-court training opportunities, and may provide an opportunity to officiate a higher level of play than the camper has previously experienced. Annual plans usually also include at least one "Advanced Referee camp", which is intended for the experienced referee who is seeking the next level of skills and expertise. The Advanced Referee Camp application process is explained below.

Click here for more information on camp scholarships that are available.

The camp experience offers the following:

  • A chance to officiate with officials from other areas of the country
  • Evaluations without the intensity of a rating session
  • Feedback from seasoned evaluators
  • An atmosphere conducive to learning and fun!

At many camps, the camper will be videotaped (with audio-feedback) during their on-court experiences. After completing the camp, campers have the option of having summarized evaluation information sent to conference coordinators and assignors across the country.

Take advantage of this opportunity as a camper by online registration.  Click on the "2015 Referee Training Camps" tab at the PAVO E-Store,  email PAVO@pavo.org or contact Miki at the PAVO office 888/791-2074.

Selecting the Camp That's Right for You

There are three types of camps available.  All camps include multiple opportunities to work as both first referee and second referee.  Two camps also include training for line judges.  Keep in mind that all camps include a pre-tournament meeting and classroom session the evening before the tournament.  Departures should not be planned before 8pm the day of the tournament.

Referee Training Camp

This level of camp is intended to provide educational and on-court experience for referees looking to build their foundation of officiating skills.  Registration is on a first-paid, first-accepted basis.

Collegiate Referee Camp

These camps intended to strengthen the knowledge and skills of a referee already officiating at any division of women's collegiate competition.  Rosters are filled on a first-paid, first-accepted basis.

Advanced Referee Camp

Advanced camps are highly competitive camps as they are intended for the referee interested in breaking into the top tier conferences or to prepare officials pursuing a PAVO National rating.  Video feedback with voice-over commentary is included.  Applications must be submitted for full consideration by PAVO.  Submit the application, two letters of recommendation, and an officiating resume extended to March 10 to the PAVO Central Office (PO Box 780, Oxford KS 67119).  Registration fees may be paid by check and submitted with the application materials, or paid online, but must be paid by March 15.  Campers who are not accepted will be refunded.

Line Judge Training Camp

PAVO's Line Judge Camps coincide with referee training camps to provide opportunities for line judges to gain exposure and improve their skills working with a full crew in a competitive, but non-threatening, environment.  Camps will include a post-match debriefing with seasoned evaluators, feedback from a seasoned line judge with post-season experience, and opportunities to practice using the most current NCAA rules and interpretations.  These camps are designed for line judges interested in in creasing their fundamental skills, gaining a National Line Judge certification, and/or earning post-season assignments.
